Blake’s extraordinary poem describes God’s creation of the tiger as requiring special courage - "What the hand dare seize the fire" (of thine eyes) - and special equipment - "What the hammer? what the chain? In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? what dread grasp Dare its deadly terrors clasp?"
The five voices paint all these pictures, including the anvil with off-beat hammer-strokes, culminating in the serene one of "the stars…watered heaven with their tears" while God smiled.
