Symphonies Nos 82A and 82B are both one movement symphonies based on exactly the same material, but the material is treated in totally different ways.

They are not necessarily intended to be performed together in the same programme, but if they are, it would probably be better to perform them separated by some other piece of music, as they are not obvious bedfellows. 82A is basically romantic, whereas 82B is anything but. The order in which they are to be performed is completely up to the conductor.

The inspiration came from two books by Stephen King. Desperation and The Regulators (the second published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman). The books use identical characters and setting, but the stories are very different from each other
