The piece starts with string basses and ’celli setting the mood, followed by low divisi bass voices and tenors "in the depths." Altos, tenors and soprano voices come in alone or in pairs with English translation of the traditional Latin text. Violas and violins reinforce the ’cello ostinato and add tension. Full choir builds up gradually in layered section entrances as the minor gives way to major, the violin ostinato mirroring the rising motifs of the vocal line, culminating in a big tutti "Amen."
