This piece is designed with the intention of being playable by a vast array of different solo instruments. I’ve written it centered around ’C’ so that any necessary transpositions would be as simple as possible. If you’re considering performing this, but the range in some areas is too impractical for your instrument, please feel free to alter the octaves of any of the sections - you are given free license to impose 8va’s or 8vb’s wherever you would like in order to make the piece as idiomatic as possible for your instrument.

A brief sampling of instruments which (with the proper transposition and octave corrections) I believe could work quite well are: flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, bassoon, amplified quitar, tin-whistle, ocarina, etc. Please note as well that I’ve intentionally kept the solo part entirely diatonic - this way non-chromatic instruments could also conceivably perform this without having to get into unrealiable extended techniques like half-holing, etc.

This piece is a set of variations on a traditional Japanese folk song. ’Tanabata’ is an annual Japanese star festival set in the context of an old legend concerning the lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi (occasionally given other names), and the song associated with it is one of my favourites of Japanese traditional music. Read more about the festival at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanabata
