Ecce sacerdos magnus
(Behold a Great Priest)
Although Bruckner’s choral writing has deep roots in Renaissance counterpoint, he also broke new harmonic ground, especially here in his setting of Ecce sacerdos magnus. He manifested his creative power in varied textures, bold harmonies, and masterful scoring. Written for the 100th anniversary on Linz (Austria) Cathedral in 1885, it was not heard until 1912.
