These five songs are selected and arranged from the two collections of settings for voice and piano from A.E. Housman's 'A Shropshire Lad' made by George Butterworth. Dealing with the transience of youth and love and of young men going off to war, the songs are made all the more poignant in that not long after their composition Butterworth himself went off to serve in the Great War and was killed in 1916. They would be very suitable for events commemorating the centenary of the Great War during 2014-18.
