John Geeres (d.1642) was a layclerk, first at King’s College Cambridge, then at Durham Cathedral.

Three English anthems by him survive in manuscripts at Cambridge (Peterhouse) and Durham; but he also wrote this Latin-texted work, which I argue, in a detailed article, was probably the exercise for the Bachelor of Music degree he took from King’s in 1623.

For a brief discussion of the music and its probable context, see: Ian Payne, ’Thomas Bateson and Randal Jewett: Music degrees 1464-1640 and Trinity College, Dublin’, The Consort, 70 (Summer 2014), 41-66 (especially pp. 46, 54).

My reconstruction is published here by kind permission of the Master and Fellows of Peterhouse, Cambridge.
