Found an interesting piano fragment in my files, which sounded like the middle of a piece. Tried to write a beginning to go with it. The result didn’t really fit with the fragment, but I liked it, so I developed it into its own piece. Early on, I realized that it was strongly influenced by “Highwayman” (as sung by Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash), which I’d been listening to on repeat for many hours. So the working title was “piano highwayman”. Soon that changed to “Path”, something about how we choose our path in life, and the person represented in this piece makes unfortunate choices.
