Home > Woodwind trio > Land of the Silver Birch (fl & 2cl)

A slightly wistful interpretation of this traditional Canadian melody, arranged for flute and two clarinets. Part 2 (Clarinet) is appropriate for a pupil approaching ABRSM Grade 1 standard, while Parts 1 & 3 are better suited to players of Grade 2+. There is also a lower octave version of Part 1 that can be played by oboe – this requires good control of low notes and also provides an exercise in the use of forked F fingering.

The piece can also be performed by a larger ensemble, with several players to a part. Optional extras include a bassoon part well within the scope of a Grade 1 player and an easy flute part with a range of only 3 notes.

This arrangement of Land of the Silver Birch is relatively straightforward but requires (and promotes) expressive playing. It has proved a big favourite with ensembles of adult learners.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
