Franz von Suppe (1819-1895) worked in the Viennese theatre, and for the last 30 years of his life was in charge of the theatre ’An der Wien’. He wrote over 150 operas and operettas. He is perhaps best known for his Overtures ’Light Cavalry’ and ’Poet & Peasant’ This transcription works well on the organ and has proved as popular in recent recitals as it did during the earlier part of the 20th. century in ’Town Hall’ recitals.
