Max Reger wrote four tone poems for orchestra after Arnold Böchlin, a Swiss symbolist painter. This piece, the first of the four, is titled The hermit playing the violin. It’s from Op. 128 composed in 1913. Aside from the musical value this would be a good piece to explore balance and blending of colors. I also have a version of this piece arranged as a nonet.
