BROOKS-DAVIES: Softly the night is sleeping: For Christmas Eve. SATB + keyboard. Revised 2014.
A gentle setting of an anonymous Sussex poem for Christmas Eve based on the angels’ words to the shepherds above Bethlehem. The accompaniment should be unobtrusive except where marked otherwise, and the choir should enjoy the ff climaxes, making sure that the piano sections are really piano in contrast. The key changes/chromatics make it look far more formidable to sing than it in fact is. NOTE: original key was F, ideal for trebles; this is the revised version of 2014 in E flat, which is much kinder to sopranos. Ideal for carol concerts, or church performance, for which it was originally written, and where it was originally performed. Many thanks to those Choir Directors, here and abroad, who have performed it and written with suggestions.
