This overture was composed to mark the 200th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo. It lasts about 19 minutes, and roughly follows the events of the battle; although written from a broadly ’British/Allied’ point of view, it also pays tribute to the courage of the French army, and incorporates marches, trumpet and drum calls from the Napoleonic period. It is suitable for professional bands but also for college and advanced school bands, and would make a very suitable piece for any concerts commemorating this famous event, which changed the history of Europe and the world.
