The anthem of the United States of America since 3rd March 1931, "The Star Spangled Banner" famously celebrates the triumphant survival of a US flag of 15 stars and 15 stripes through the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British ships during a key battle of the War of 1812. Yet the tune itself was actually written by a Briton - John Stafford Smith's melody was originally written as the anthem not of a noble young Republic but of a London "gentleman's club" called The Anacreontic Society.

When Francis Scott Key witnessed the victorious stand of the American forces in the Battle of Baltimore, he was moved to write the ode "Defence of Fort McHenry", and included in its first publication was the suggestion that it be sung to the tune of "The Anacreontic Song", which was already a popular tune in the U.S.

This new arrangement for orchestra is by London composer and arranger Jonathan Preiss, continuing the transatlantic story of this much loved melody. A bold and direct rendition ideal for concert performance or for events where the anthem will be sung, this arrangement is full of sparkling percussion, the sound of the fife and drum and stirring strings and brass.
