William Clayton penned this well-known adaptation of All is Well in 1846 to celebrate the birth of his child and to cheer himself and the other Mormon refugees as they travelled from Nauvoo, Illinois to what was to become Winter Quarters, Nebraska. My great-grandfather Henry Herman Ludwig Kotter was introduced to the Mormon church in the early 1860's when he heard a congregation singing this hymn while he was walking down the street in a small Danish town and was known to say in his later years that we no longer sing Come, Come, Ye Saints like we used to. In an attempt to create a setting that might sound like the one he heard, I have based this version on the setting of All is Well found in The Sacred Harp. Listeners will note the typical harmonic language of shape-note music, although I have moved the melody to the soprano, with the tenors singing the part originally given to the sopranos (trebles). The only other change is one in tempo, from 4/4 to 6/8, in order to better match Claytons words. I hope you enjoy it.
