The polka Vergnügungszug (Amusement Train – Train de Plasir) was composed by Johann Strauss, Jr. on the occasion of the industrialists ’ Association ball held in the Redoutensaal in Vienna on January 19, 1864 to celebrate the opening of the new railway network in southern Austria. Strauss, however, was not the first composer to write music for celebrate the innovations of technology. Many years before Johann Strauss father had highlighted the opening of the first Austrian steam railway on November 14, 1837 between the Viennese suburbs of Floridsdorf and Deutsch Wagram with a waltz entitled Eisenbahn-Lust Walzer op. 89 and Eduard Strauss wrote his famous fast polka Bahn Frei op. 45 to celebrate the opening of a new railway line.
