This hymn-tune first appeared in Ravenscroft's "Whole Book of Psalmes" (1621), where it was set to Psalms 16 and 64 and entitled "Bristol Tune". The rhythmic values used in modern hymnals can vary and I have added small note values in the score to assist with this. The score presents the hymn in its normal format and then in a faux-bourdon setting for verse 3, with the tune in the tenor. The descant is almost the same in each version. The words for this Advent hymn by Philip Doddridge are based on Luke 4: 18-19.
