The words of this Latin Christmas hymn were published by John Francis Wade (c.1711-1786) in his "Cantus Diversi pro Dominicis et Festis per annum" (1751). The tune was probably by John Francis Wade, and there are manuscript sources, probably in Wade’s hand, dating from around 1740.
