Feature your flute player with this well-known solo from Bizet’s l’Arlesienne Suite #2 and add a novel scoring to a quintet concert by substituting guitar for the oboe. The languid flute solo drifts over the guitar for the opening and closing of the work with a countermelody in the clarinet on the repeat. The more energetic mid-section provides a contrast.
The guitar part uses standard tuning with the E string lowered to D and a capo on the first fret. This provides much simpler fingering than if the piece were played in Eb.
This arrangement has the added benefit of giving the oboist a much-needed rest and allows for thinner scoring in the other winds than does the standard wind quintet version. If desired, the guitar part could be played by harp or synthesizer.
