The music for this Christmas hymn has been credited to Handel, adapted by Lowell Mason, but it seems that Mason adapted a melody found in William Holford's "Voce di Melodia" (c.1834). Perhaps the Handel reference came from the tune's resemblance to "Lift up your heads" in "Messiah". If the 3rd verse is sung, trumpets should be tacet. Parts for both Bb and C trumpets are included at the end of the score.
