It shows a shift in American composer, Gordon Francis Blaney Jr., from a German school of writing to a French school of writing. While Satie's "The Gymnopédies" have a greater metronome marking, Blaney thought and felt that the metronome marking for inspired works should be of a lesser metronome marking. The composer is quoted as stating: "What I want from the performer and the audience is for them to get lost in the moment".
The “Gymnopaedia” were dances performed at festivals in Ancient Greece by young men bereft, for the occasion, of clothing (“gymnos,” naked, plus “pais,” youth). A person should feel free of all when performing and when listening to this work.
