Monti's thrilling Czardas, orginally for violin (or mandolin) and piano, has been arranged many times, and is occasionally played as a virtuosic display for descant (soprano) and piano, but this is the first arrangement for recorder ensemble. Although the focus is on the solo, descant, part, and the under-parts are largely rhythmically and harmonically supportive, I have shared some of the excitement amongst the lower parts. A csardas is a Hungarian Gypsy dance, so it is essential to listen to each other, to play with the dynamics and tempi (loads of rubato!), and relax into it. A superb concert piece or encore.
