You know those times when you walk into your kitchen to make some food, and you wonder what you can make from the remaining left overs in the fridge? This is the musical version of this scenario! Having completed a piece a while ago I had some left over chords, and so I recently set myself the challenge of creating something completely different from this unused material. Quite quickly through improvising at the piano I came up with the main melodic material and the general two part structure, although the piece was redrafted a couple of times - originally it was going to be for Brass Quintet, but I realised the piece would require larger forces than that, and might also benefit from the additional colouration provided by the percussion parts.
Although the piece is a fanfare, I decided that the ideas would have more emotional power if the dynamics were restrained for a lot of the time, with ebb and flow rather than an aural assault on the senses. For this reason, the loudest dynamics can be found at the end where the idea is for the sound to ring out (reverb) at the end.
