The first movement of my first symphony (the other three are still under construction) started out simply as an oboe solo with a string accompaniment. The melodies I used in this piece were not predetermined - mostly I just wrote what seemed to make sense next. In a few cases, I heard a melody. This method of finding themes, rather than writing a theme and using it as a basis for the piece, turned into a much more natural and organic feel, I think.
This is still a work in progress, and while I'm very happy about the movement in its current state, I certainly welcome and comments and suggestions for improvement.
