This composition is a setting of a theme originally written in the 1950s. The theme was influenced by typical motifs used by Sibelius. The current setting is for string quintet (or larger string ensemble), piano and percussion. The title "Rush" refers not only to the somewhat agitated or rushing pace *except for a slower section in the middle), but also for the feeling or a "rush" the music may hopefully engender. The harmonization frequently utilizes chords based on open fourths and fifths, and the piece is essentially modal (not based on traditional keys).
