"Etude in Lyric Style" is a solo composition for tenor recorder in contemporary lyric style, which emphasizes a kind of recitative or expressive utterance from the solo instrument without the assistance of an accompaniment to set the harmonic background and mood. This piece, like my "White Tree" and "Estel" (both for solo alto recorder), asks for a flexible, relaxed approach to meter and great sensitivity to phrasing. Structurally the composition, like those others mentioned, bases its form on variations and interplay of various brief melodic motifs. The final "meno mosso" part is playful and focuses on the major mode harmonies implied by the melodic line.
