This nocturne is essentially monothematic, moving from a dark opening in F# minor to a more hopeful major key conclusion. While it is intended that it should lead directly into the finale of the sonata (q.v.), hence the marking "attacca" at the end, it can, like the scherzo, probably be played as a separate piece.
