Prelude to Dawn
The piece starts with horns over a sub-bass rumble looking forward to the start of a new day. The trumpets herald the arrival of the first shafts of light and the the orchestra joins in as the whole earth awakes in anticipation. The central melodic section reflects on the joy of the early part of the day and the martial section reminds us of that constant potential for danger. Once a reprise of the opening fanfare concludes, the piece dissolves quietly into the rest of the day to come.
