The Modal Dances can be considered 'a collection of seven short pieces for wind trio', and as such any of the movements, or indeed groups of movements, may be used as independent interludes or short suits unto themselves.

Aeolian

The main idea of this movement is that of golden relationships. The form of the piece was determined by it, as the piece is divided into golden ratio sections of itself. The greater divisions determined where changes of style were to occur, and each of these greater sections were divided forwards and backwards upon themselves with lesser sections, which dictated where the stressing of phrases would occur and small-scale events similar to this.
