Joseph Swains beautiful hymn O Thou In Whose Presence was very popular in early nineteenth century America, especially at revivals and camp-meetings. The tune most often associated with Swains text at this time was Davis, a hauntingly beautiful melody first recorded by John Wyeth in his Repository of Sacred Music, Part Second, in 1813. This melody has all the elements of a folk tune and was undoubtedly written down from local tradition, as were many other tunes in Wyeth's collection. William W. Phelps, an early Mormon convert, included his adaption of Swains text in the first Mormon hymnal, published in 1835. The text of my arrangement is taken from this 1835 hymnal, and the music is based on the three part setting (soprano [treble], tenor, bass) published by Wyeth, to which I have added a simple alto part. Also, in Wyeths version the melody is assigned to the tenors and a high harmony part to the sopranos (trebles). I've switched these in this arrangement. I hope you enjoy it. Please let me know what you think.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
