The original of this piece was the result of being set the task of writing a song "in the style of Schubert". It did not take many years to realise that the piece works better in this instrumental version. Although viola or ’cello are recommended, "Sonnet" could be played by nearly any solo instrument. To facilitate this, the viola part is presented entirely in the treble clef, and the ’cello part entirely in the bass clef.
