Quintessentially English music! During his short life, George Butterworth followed the musical fashion of the time, collecting English folk-songs, often with his friend Vaughan Williams, and incorporated two of them ("The Banks of the Green Willow" and "Green Bushes") in this "Idyll". Butterworth was killed in August 1916, aged 31, at the Battle of the Somme.
Arranged for Clarinet Choir, it is scored for 1 Eb Clarinet, 5 Bb Clarinets, 1 Alto, 2 Bass Clarinets, with optional Contra Alto and Contra Bass parts. There are alternative Bb parts to cover both the Eb and Alto Clarinet parts, so it may be played by a minimum of 7 Bb Clarinets and 2 Basses.
