In my opinion, Isaac Watts is the Shakespeare of hymnody, and his inspired lyric in this short hymn is the most poetic, succinct and devout meditation ever written about the cross of Christ. When I sing this hymn, I usually change keys each verse to heighten the listener's attention, because the simple 5-note melody, though beautiful, can become monotonous. I have also varied the harmonies and keys in this arrangement and hope you find it useful. Special thanks to Douglas Morgan, whose email request challenged me to revisit this old gem.
