’Miserere’ for mixed choir is a choral transcription of an earlier string orchestral piece - ’Elegy’ for string orchestra. The piece combines the Old Italian style of word setting with the heavy bass texture of the Russian Orthodox mass. The music consists of three sections - the outer sections are simple in form, with the middle section being more complex with its use of chromatism. ’Miserere’ is an evocative piece of music illustrating the solemn nature of the Latin text accompanied with an element of hopefulness.
