The German cellist Georg Goltermann (1824-1898) is known today mostly for his eight concerti, the first five of which are still in print and used mostly by students. He also wrote a many salon pieces, the best of which are charming and well worth playing. Among them are two sets of German Dances, of which this is the first. They have a character between a waltz and a laendler and are delightful to play and listen to.
