The African-American composer Scott Joplin (c. 1867 – 1917) is famous for developing and popularising ‘ragtime’ music, bringing this into mainstream musical awareness. In his early life, he travelled round the southern US states as a musician, then began publishing his music in 1895. Although not as famous as the Maple Leaf Rag or The Entertainer, the Sycamore Rag - here in an arrangement for woodwind trio of flute, oboe and clarinet - nonetheless still has all the characteristics of a typical Joplin work.
