An arrangement of 'A Policeman's Lot…' for woodwind trio of flute, clarinet and bassoon. A bass clarinet alternative to the bassoon part is also provided for added flexibility.
‘A Policeman’s Lot’ – also known as ‘The Policeman’s Song’ or by its opening line ‘When a Felon’s not Engaged in his Employment’ – is one of the best-known numbers from The Pirates of Penzance (or The Slave of Duty). Sullivan’s music effectively captures the ponderous self-importance of the policeman, serving only to highlight the way in which Gilbert’s lyrics satirise this particular branch of the establishment. The song is regularly adapted for use as a ‘party piece’, with other professions and their particular challenges substituted for the police force.
