'When I First Put this Uniform On' from Gilbert & Sullivan's Patience, arranged for woodwind trio of flute, clarinet and bassoon. A bass clarinet alternative to the bassoon part is also provided, for added flexibility.

Patience (or Bunthorne’s Bride) was the first theatrical production to be lit entirely by electricity. The focus of this operetta is the fashionable aesthetic movement of late nineteenth century England. The song ‘When I First Put this Uniform On’ – sung by the Colonel and a chorus of dragoon guards – recounts an expectation that, by becoming a soldier, the wearer would be respected by civilians and, in particular, attractive to women. Instead, the singers are frustrated to discover that plump, long-haired poets now hold the primary fascination for the opposite sex.
