The Orono Concerto for piano and orchestra is so named because it was begun while I was a student at the University of Maine in Orono. It was not intended to be descriptive of the place. The concerto, completed in 2005, is a three movement work that uses a number of techniques of contemporary composition including parallel, bitonal, and other complex harmonies, polyrhythms, frequent changes in time signature, abandonment of typical key structures and cadences, yet on the whole sounding quite traditional.

The first movement is light-hearted in tone and in standard sonata form.

The second movement is of the form: (B intro)-A-B-A-(B coda). It is a much more somber movement than the first, completed about the time of my father’s death.

The final movement is a rondo form characterized by different rhythms.
