After the Cry is a reworking of a composition of mine titled The Cry which was composed in 1993. In that piece I set a poem of that name by Lorca; the piece is part of my song cycle called Songs of Love and Terror for mezzo-soprano and ensemble. The poem has a verse/refrain form and I have retained this idea in the music. Between cries, Lorca presents a calm set of similes to do with the shape of the cry, likening it, for instance to that of a mountain. At the time I investigated the nature of explosions and was intrigued to learn that they have as much energy at the end of the process as at the beginning.
