A note on my original MS of this piece reads:"Completed on 31st January 1977. To Mary as a momento of Easter 1976". In the 1970s our family had a number of holidays in mid-Wales. Pen-Bryn Beach is near Cardigan. At one end of the sands is a sea-cave, and into it, my wife, Mary, took her flute one day and improvised. This piece tries to capture the atmosphere of that occasion:the echo in the cave, the wind, that merged with and almost obliterated the flute's sound when she ventured outside, the crash of the waves, all this to be borne in mind when playing it.
