There are twelve variations in all. The theme and first two variations are played by the unaccompanied solo violin, with the orchestra entering for the third variation. Generally speaking the pace gradually increases towards the finale with the sedate theme eventually ending up transformed into an Irish jig. (Incidentally the finale is in itself a small set of variations and is posted on sibmus as a separate piece.) Although the solo violin clearly leads the way, there are times when it plays a concertante role and feels like part of the orchestra. Watch out for a shark attack at bar 566 (if you know your film music), and a brief appearance by an Irish washerwoman just before the end.
