This is a setting of the remarkable poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins - 'The Wreck of the Deutschland'. This was written in commemoration of the death of some Catholic nuns in a ship wreck in 1875, and was the first major poem Hopkins wrote after a long self-imposed ban on writing after he had become a Jesuit priest. It is much more than a commemoration, though - it is a kind of spiritual autobiography of Hopkin's own struggles for faith, and also a mystical vision of the terror and glory of God and his creation, and of the splendour of faith in extreme adversity. The setting is for double choir and organ, with solo voices from the choir, and lasts about 40 minutes.
