The root of Elgars work is his gift for melody while his harmonic structures are richly diverse, sometimes chromatic at others touchingly diatonic; his orchestration is brilliant and colourful with particularly impressive use of string textures. Edward Elgars first four Pomp and Circumstance marches were composed between 1901-07; the trio of the first march in D which very quickly became the song Land of Hope and Glory made Elgar unofficial national musical laureate; he succeeded to the post of Master of the Kings Music in 1924.
