Cadenza Ingannata, 12 pieces for piano solo after titles by Rip Cohen, was composed in 1978 when John Carbon was still a graduate student. The pieces comprise a set of continuous variations freely based on a 12-note motive. It is the composer's only work to use this technique, and the approach is more tonal than not. The titles Rip Cohen gave the composer have erotic overtones, such as "Straining Thighs."
