Sir CHARLES VILLIERS STANFORD (1852-1924)
Irish composer, conductor and teacher. In 1883 Stanford was made Mus.D. honoris causa at Oxford University, and he received the same degree at Cambridge in 1888. He was appointed professor of composition at the Royal College of Music as well as conductor of the orchestra and operatic class. His widespread reputation as a composer was achieved mainly through his substantial contribution to Church music, and I have arranged one of his anthems O Praise God In His Holiness for Parish Choir and String Quartet which is available on this site.
