Part of the CD-booklet-text: The Duo for violin and cello was commissioned by Kitty Weinberger in 2002 and is dedicated to her. It was premiered two years later by Tomasz Tomaszewski and Pi-Chin Chien. The work has five movements. Two slow movements, «Prélude» and «Meditation», frame three fast movements, «Scherzo»,«Bagatelle» and «Perpetuum». The Prélude begins in unison with a lyrical theme that climaxes dramatically in the middle of the movement and then returns to the quiet, mysterious opening mood. The Scherzo is fast and lively, flirting with harmonic and melodic elements in an animated dialogue between the two instruments. The Bagatelle is based on a simple, folksong-like theme which is now lyrical, now dance-like in character. Beginning very softly and almost ephemerally, the wavelike arpeggios of the Perpetuum contrast with a wild and very corporeal tarantella. Meditation, the last movement, uses a melody of rather free metre which recalls Gregorian chant. A songful cello solo in the second half leads into a garland of notes in the violin which finally ends in the barely audible key of C major.
