At the beginning of 2004 my wife Pi-Chin Chien was invited as soloist by the „Academy of Taiwan Strings“ on a European tour. She asked me to write a piece to honor the birthday of a friend who helped to organise a concert for her and the ensemble in Germany. I responded to her request by writing a „Barcarole“ for cello and strings. The musicians performed this piece to a enthusiastic audiences at each concert at their European tour.
After my wife received an invitation to give a concert with the „Academy of Taiwan Strings“ in Taipei. I decided to expand the Barcarole into a large-scale work the „Suite for Violoncello and Strings“. It has five movements. The rhythmic, dramatic first movement „Tempo di Marcia“ is followed by a lyrical „Lento“ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORsnZDM9Oh8). The third movement is a „Gavotte“ which includes elements of western folk music. The fourth movement is the „Barcarole“ followed by the „Finale“, a swift Allegro.
