I have always been influenced by film music. The harmonies, the transitions, the way the music tells the story, it’s all so interesting to me, and was the reason I wanted to be a composer. I find that film music’s influence can be heard in a lot of my music, but for Music for Brass and Percussion I wanted to write something that I would’ve never thought about writing for something outside of film. I wanted this piece to have the sound of an action, or chase sequence that you would find in an adventure movie of sorts. I was first very hesitant to do this because this type of music often has quick changes in character or texture that I was unsure if it would translate into a concert setting well. However, after having my sketches reviewed, which were originally for orchestra, I started to feel more comfortable with it, and thus, Music for Brass and Percussion was written. The opening of the work is very ominous and distant, to give the feeling that something is coming, which transitions into the “chase.” The middle section has a theme to represent a possible antagonist, which is given a march variation to give the theme a militaristic feel to symbolise the “battle” that is taking place. Finally, to have this piece be better adapted for a concert hall I decided the ending should be something that sounds final instead of transitionatory like a lot of action music is, and so the piece ends with a triumphant fanfare that includes rich sonorities before ending on the joyous and heroic chord of Eb major.
