The Mexican Hat Dance is the national dance of Mexico. Although perceived as ‘traditional’, the music we associate with the Mexican Hat Dance – or Jarabe Tapatío – was actually composed by Jesús González Rubio in the nineteenth century.
The origins of the courtship dance Jarabe Tapatío are much earlier. Originally danced by female couples, to avoid the disapproval of the church, the dance was banned altogether in the late eighteenth century. It was perceived as both morally degenerate and a threat to Spain’s control of the territory, offending both religious and colonial authorities. As often happens in such situations, the dance then became a general symbol of protest and rebellion.
Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova popularised the Mexican Hat Dance internationally, after including it in her repertoire following a visit to Mexico in 1919.
